From north Wicklow, Dublin etc. - take exit 13 off the N11. At roundabout take second exit for Newcastle.

* Follow windy road for 2kms passing church on the right and castle ruin on the left. At T-junction in village, turn right and drive through village heading south. Pass petrol station and community centre on the left and leave the village. Approx 2kms after village, just past a run of cottages, take small lane on the left, L5065, signposted for Five Mile Point. Take great care at this junction. Come to a full stop on the main road as you take this turn as cars may be coming up the lane. As you cannot pass a car on this lane be prepared to pull in or reverse to a safe spot on the way. On the road pass two houses on the left and two on the right. Our house is half a mile down the road on the left just after the large farm shed on the right. Take the site entrance with the temporary road and park in the field.
PS. If you reach the sea you have gone too far!

Extension and upgrade to 1970s house aiming to achieve passive house EnerPHit standard – currently on site. The concept for the design is to accommodate the family’s space requirements in a layout that responds to the context of the site. In order to reduce the mass of the extension it has been designed as a series of smaller areas defined by different roof sections to resemble a collection of farm buildings in the landscape. The challenge is to achieve the passive standard with a configuration that does not have the ideal compact form due to site restrictions, client layout preferences and the decision to take full advantage of the views to the north and west. Phase 1 consists of a 200sqm extension which is currently under construction (shell complete and windows fitted). The specification includes a 300mm insulated raft foundation system, solid block walls with external insulation and render, polished concrete floor, warm roof construction using timber I-beams with zinc on the mono-pitch sections and a rubberised roof covering on flat roof areas, triple glazed windows and rainwater harvesting. Phase 2 will be a deep retrofit of the original bungalow and the addition of a store and carport. While the new extension can be constructed to the highest energy standards, the final outcome as to whether the complete project will achieve the EnerPHit standard will be ultimately determined by the viability of the extensive works required to the existing house . As this is a site visit please wear sturdy shoes and a warm jacket.
